2019 brings changes to employment law

The new year is almost here and with its arrival come new laws concerning various workplace issues. They  include new laws on minimum wage, workplace harassment and discrimination. These new regulations in employment law aim to further protect California workers by further enhancing their safety and providing a positive work environment.

Employees of companies with 25 or fewer workers will see hourly wages increase from $10.50 to $11. At larger companies, hourly wages will increase from $11 to $12. Agricultural workers will begin to receive overtime pay. The amount will gradually increase over a period of four years and applies to companies with more than 25 employees.

There are also new laws regarding sexual harassment and discrimination. One law protects victims and companies from defamation suits being brought by an accused harasser while a case of sexual harassment is being investigated. The law also prohibits confidentiality agreements in cases of harassment unless the person claiming harassment requests such an agreement. Additionally, companies may not discriminate against nursing mothers and must make reasonable efforts to provide a space for nursing other than a rest room.

These measures may go a long way to help improve the conditions for many working Californians. Being aware of the changes can help ensure that one benefits as intended from these changes.
